An Infinite Plain is an Installation of new work using film medium and projection surface as materials for exploring sound and duration.
Through considering the space in Bates Mill, the works are positioned as elements that interact with the available natural light. Film surfaces are slowly stripped of their emulsions at a rate that is imperceptible. These are wired to produce sound that will oscillate at varying rates through the exhibition. Whilst being independent of each other, their acoustic responses can be heard as minimalist/maximalist with the space.
Other elements are structurally inverted as a collection of used projection screens that have been inverted both physically and metaphorically. Multiple projection surfaces are sensitized to light, in an attempt to make the surfaces photosensitive (albeit really slow) thus speculating an exposure that is in perpetuity.
This Exhibition is supported with a short essay by Ben as well as a performance of ‘breakdownspedup’ (small work for frozen cassettes) at the Preview on the 11th April. There will also be an in-conversation between Ben Gwilliam and Ryoko Akama about sound in an Arts Practice on the 16th April at 11am.
