The Ebbing and Flow is a new collaboration between Jess Rymer and Glen Montanaro which explores Maltese and Yorkshire folk songs and stories through two distinct musical approaches. The result is an experimental fusion of musical styles and colours directing a narrative journey which has been recounted for years, and is still relevant today.
Jess Rymer is a British composer and sound artist currently residing in Malta. She received her BA in Music from Bath Spa University and her Masters in Music Composition from the University of Malta. Jess has produced collaborative music compositions for numerous dance performances, including productions by ZfinMalta, and her research specialises in choreomusical collaboration. As a performer
Jess’ main instruments are the trumpet and live electronics and she specialises in contemporary repertoire.
Jess is a co-founder of For Your Ears Only, an organisation dedicated to promoting contemporary music in Malta. Jess is also a founder of the Malta Sound Women Network, committed to supporting creative processes of women in sound composition.
Glen Montanaro studied theory & composition obtaining an A-level and later on shifting to Jazz guitar studying with prominent teachers including Warren Galea, Clint Campisi and Alan Portelli.
He furthered his studies in Jazz guitar in Italy where he completed two seminars and a pre-academic year. Returning from Siena, he formed a trio, focusing on writing music and leading. In 2017, he took part in an intercultural residency in France led by Fabrizio Cassol where his interest in Middle-Eastern music and Mediterranean music developed. He is now self-studying and performing in Malta.
