17.18/02 (Mon.Tues): Subtraction Cutting Workshop with Julian Roberts + Mariam Bendeliani @ Barbara Hepworth Building, Huddersfield University

In collaboration with Design and Architecture Department of Huddersfield University, ame will delightedly deliver a workshop and showcase that think of patterns, ideas and sculptures.
Julian Roberts + Mariam Bendeliani are ready to work with textile students on Subtraction Cutting method – created by fashion designer Julian Roberts». This pattern cutting technique known as “Subtraction Cutting” makes the most of the negative spaces that can be opened up in fabric and falls somewhere between traditional pattern making and drape resulting in experimental garments that break the boundaries of the usual garment shapes.
This is a pattern cutting technique that Julian has shared with many around the world through lectures and demonstrations of the subtraction cutting method. A pdf of his book “Free Cutting” is now available to download for free from the link below, and is a must read for all fashion students or adventurous home sewers.

The idea is shared back with the creators alongside the music by Tatiana Heuman and Ján Solčáni. The garments, video archive and music will be touring after April 2020, starting at Dai Hall.
BIO:
Julian Roberts was born in Wales UK, and studied Fashion at Newcastle and the Royal College of Art in London. He’s shown numerous collections and films at London Fashion Week and at various art exhibitions. He is the inventor of ‘Subtraction Cutting’ and has taught experimental cutting and drawing masterclasses in 36 countries.
Mariam Bendeliani was born in Tbilisi, Georgia. She studied Fashion at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts graduating in 2018. She explores her own unique approach to Subtraction Cutting alongside interning for brands, and has future interests in developing experimental tailoring, and connections to music.
