UNspellable is a new concert series promoted by ame, taking place around Huddersfield in 2019/20. Both UK based and international artists are programmed, presenting a wide range of infinitely fascinating but awkwardly unclassifiable music – including improvisation, contemporary composition, electronic, sound art, and electro-pop. Season 1 of UNspellable invites six outstanding musicians from Japan working with UK-based musicians, in collaboration with Small Seeds and Bar Maroc.

Toshimaru Nakamura is a Japanese musician active in free improvisation, noise and Japanese Onkyo. Pioneering the use of no-input mixing board as a performance instrument in the mid-1990’s, he has since then appeared on over one hundred audio publications, including nine solo CD’s. He has collaborated with artists including Sachiko M, Otomo Yoshihide, Keith Rowe, John Butcher, Espen Reinertsen, Nicholas Bussmann, Taku Sugimoto, Tetuzi Akiyama, dancer Kim Ito, and drummer Jason Kahn.
As an active organizer of concerts in Tokyo, Nakamura has helped many musicians coming to Japan find places to perform, both with himself and with others. The series he has organised since 1998 were crucially important in exposing a new manner to improvised music (referred to as Electro Acoustic Improvisation) to the Japanese public and to foreign musicians visiting Japan, making Tokyo one of the global hotspots for this new approach to music.
Sam Andreae is a saxophonist and composer working in the fields of improvised and experimental music. After graduating from the RNCM in Manchester in 2008 I became an active member of the local jazz and experimental music scene, I helped found Efpi Records, the long running jazz/experimental series Freedom Principle and Learn Live, a series focused on opening up conversations between improvising musicians and audiences.
After returning from studying on the Nordic Jazz Masters in Scandinavia in 2013 I continued to explore improvised music as part of the active DIY and experimental music scene in Manchester. This included a residency with Kelly Jayne Jones and Pascal Nichols at Borealis Festival in Norway, releasing my debut solo CD on Manchester label Tombed Visions, participating on the Take Five development scheme run by by concert producer Serious and in 2014 being invited with David Birchall to be resident artist on the ACE funded Noise Above Noise program at The Penthouse.
David Birchall is a musician living and working in Manchester in real time with sound and instruments. He improvises solo and with others using guitars, objects and non-fixed instrument structures. In recent times he has shared stages with Sam Andreae, Greta Buitkute, Andrew Cheetham, THF Drenching, Toshimaru Nakamura, Colin Webster, Alan Wilkinson and IIan Volkov.
Otto Willberg is a Double Bass player and improviser involved with multiple contemporary music and improvised music groups. He currently leads the band Early Nite, which is participating on Jazz North’s subsidised roster scheme ‘Northern Line’. In April 2017 he participated in an AIDF funded tour to Japan which included performances with renowned experimental musician Toshimaru Nakamura, and resulted in a live album release on the Raw Tonk label. As an improvising double bassist he has toured mainland Europe and performed in groups with musicians Alex Ward, Hannah Marshall, and Mark Hanslip. He is also a member of the Spike Orchestra, and has performed at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, London Contemporary Music festival, Darmstadt fur Neue Musik, Supernormal and London Jazz Festival.
