Join the #RebelSelves Selfie App Workshop to dive into the world of self-portraits and queer, glitch-y selfies.

This interactive workshop empowers attendees to express themselves artistically, fostering self-exploration and creativity at different levels. Woolley will invite participants to download a new creative app to their smartphone to produce their own #RebelSelves selfies. The app is a prototype so participants will get a sneak preview while helping us to tweak and hone the app design and function before it is released to the public.

The workshop, approximately 1.5 hours, will begin with Dawn Woolley’s brief talk and introduction to her #RebelSelves art project, currently on show at Diskurs gallery, Berlin. Dawn‘s thought-provoking project, “#Rebel Selves,” confronts norms surrounding gender and beauty in selfies. Participants can capture queer selfies that defy these norms and question traditional ideals. Woolley employs glitch and abstraction techniques to disrupt conventional modes of perception, urging a reevaluation of normative standards. The project aims to liberate individuals from marketable, individualistic identities and embrace a more inclusive and non-binary self-image.

Dawn Woolley is an artist and research fellow at Leeds Arts University. Her artistic practice encompasses performance, photography, video, and installation, blurring the boundary between self-portraiture and still-life. She examines neoliberal patriarchal culture using a queer, anti-capitalist lens. It is a form of activism and a feminist critique of representations of gender in commercial and popular culture. Recent solo exhibitions include; “Joy and Revolution: Rebel Selves”, Diskurs Gallery, Berlin, 2023; “Consumed: Stilled Lives” bildkultur Gallery, Stuttgart, (2022), and Perth Centre for Photography, Australia, (2021). Consuming the Body: Capitalism, Social Media and Commodification was published in 2023 by Bloomsbury.
