Chris Ruffoni – Open Studio
Some notes from Chris:
- Large open, flexible and mostly blank canvas space extremely useful, necessary even, to be working on a piece that will be experienced outside when finished and walked around/through. I could suspend things from the ceiling which was a great way to mimic suspension from trees.
- Availability of mic stands and lights were extremely useful
- Gained a good amount of new instagram followers thanks to AME’s postings.
- I’m sure the reputation of AME brought some visitors to it who wouldn’t have seen it otherwise – made new connections and felt part of the local experimental music scene.
- Local curators visited and invited me to send proposals
- Town centre location useful for buying things i needed.
- Loading bay – very useful!
- First opportunity to work/show publicly in a inside space. Although this wasn’t an exhibition, it gave me an opportunity to play with ideas about how to show indoors, e.g. use of lighting and other aesthetical concerns. I now how some confidence that I could apply for inside shows
- Showing work in progress allowed me to gain valuable feedback and it made it much more interactive. I created a little area for people to experiment and this worked well. The interactive element helped some to stay longer. I asked most visitors questions like ‘what would you do with this/what would you try/how does this feel?. It was encouraging to see that many visitors were reading the concept of the installation as I had intended. I will definitely try to take this approach again in the future. I may create more things with interaction and an integral part (if it’s not always…)
